Jacob, Emily again the most popular baby names in America

Jacob was the most common name for baby boys born in the United States during 2005 according to the Social Security Administration. Emily was the most popular name for girls.



In total, the name Jacob appeared on 25,347 Social Security card applications for baby males born during 2005, while Emily appeared 23,544 times. Both names have topped the most popular list each year since 1998.

For boys, following Jacob, the nine next most popular names in 2005 were Michael, Joshua, Matthew, Ethan, Andrew, Daniel, Anthony, Christopher, and Joseph.

For girls, the top ten most popular names for newborns in 2005 were Emily, Emma, Madison, Abigail, Olivia, Isabella, Hannah, Samantha, Ava, and Ashley.

Ten years ago the most popular baby names were Michael and Jessica. For babies born a century ago, in 1905, the most popular names were John and Mary.

The Social Security Administration publishes America's most popular baby names on an annual basis.
